2009 MCa, R-56 Water Temperature & Oil Pressure Gauge Installation.

Remove the NEGATIVE cable from the battery FIRST! Then remove the POSITIVE and protect it from touching anything.  When hooking up after complete install of gauges hook POSITIVE up first and NEGATIVE LAST!

After removing the cup holder screws and the rear cup holder and the center arm rest the center console should be loose.  It will slide forward about 1 inch and then lift enough for you to remove( from the plastic center console but not e-brake handle) the boot for the e-brake.  Now you will be able to lift and tilt to one side the center console allowing access to the cigarette lighter and DSC button wiring. The cigarette lighter RED wire is the switched +12vdc & the BROWN wire is the ground.  On the DSC control button, the GREY wire with the RED STRIPE is the power for the gauge lighting.  The color of the illuminated gauges depends on the gauge and how that gauge is wired.  With the Marshall gauges the instructions are very clear for either WHITE lighting or AMBER (matches MINI) lighting.

Under the center console and forward up through the driver side of the heater/radio/NAV/fan control console there is enough room to lay the plastic armor flex cable that you have created out of the 3 conductors(wires).  Once in place put the footwell cover back into place and continue running the cable over to the area of the steering column.

The CravenSpeed gauge pods come with one spacer for each pod that is supposed to pull the pod away from the dashboard enough for clearance.  The right gauge interfered with the air vent so I had to make a spacer about 3/8” longer and then get a longer bolt.  The left gauge pod was fine, except the bolt did not go all the way through the FlexPod bracket(probably for cosmetic reasons) so being rather safe than sorry I shortened the spacer about 1/8” so 3 threads were showing on the backside of the FlexPox Bracket.

I found that it was NOT necessary to ground the sending unit for the Marshall oil pressure gauge, although I ran a wire while I was running all the rest.  The water temperature sensor did require a ground.  The only thing that denotes which is ground on the water temp sensor and which one runs to the gauge are the two connectors and they are NOT marked or color coded!  One connector is a female bullet connector and the other a male bullet connector.  Marshall has them identified in their paperwork that comes with the gauge as to which is which, so don’t lose the paperwork!!!  The wires are NOT color coded!

I used zip ties & plastic flex conduit for keeping the wiring from bouncing around under the hood and under the dash.

The very LAST THING TO HOOK UP is the negative terminal on the battery.  You will need to reprogram all the clocks, etc. for your Mini.  I am sure I missed something  but this might help a bit.

Good luck!

I will try to pass along the information I have learned and what I did in this simple write up.  The Custom Tee Coupling for the Automatic R-56 was turned from solid aluminum rod.  A CravenSpeed “Hotlink” will not work with the Automatic Mini, it needed to be a Tee instead of a straight coupling.
